Holiday Pet Gifts
Most pet gifts available in stores are targeted to dog and cat owners. They are the most common pets, and itˇ¦s a lot harder to dress your pet gerbil in a sweater and reindeer antlers. Or play catch with your pet snake. Aquariums are also a big sell for the holidays however. Other outrageous, unique dog toys that move fast during the holidays are plush animals, oversized rawhide bones and pet fashions such as sweaters and coats. Many new pet fashions are so stylish, you might end up wishing they had one available in your size. There are also clothing options available for cats, but they are more limited than for dogs, because most cats wonˇ¦t let their pet humans dress them. You can also get pet stockings full of treats and toys for cats and dogs alike. These are a great way to get your pet a wide variety of outrageous and unique toys. Fancy dog and cat beds are another big seller around the holidays. With styles ranging from orthopedic dog beds to cat cushions, there is sure to be an option that will please both pet and owner. When buying delicious, nutritious snacks and treats for your pets, be careful about where you store them. Holiday dog cookies look so similar to regular Christmas cookies that, just by looking, you might not know that they are beef-flavored instead of chocolate. There are even some varieties that have pet friendly sprinkles. If you want to get a gift for the pet lover in your life, but you arenˇ¦t sure what their pet might like, you can always get them a gift card to the local pet store in your area. by Groshan Fabiola ˇ@ |

How to Buy a Sweater for a Dog Dog sweaters may be cute, but some dogs need them as protection against cold weather. Buy a sweater that fits well and covers your dog's abdomen. 1. Understand that sweaters are not just a silly accessory. Many dogs need to wear them in cold weather. Shorthaired breeds, older dogs, ill dogs and puppies may need to wear sweaters for protection in cold weather. 2. Ask your vet if you are unsure whether your dog needs a sweater. 3. Shop online, or go to a local pet store to see the types of sweaters available. 4. Know that to be effective against cold a sweater should completely cover your dog's stomach, keep its legs free for easy movement, fit snugly and end at the base of the tail. 5. Notice that sweaters come in small, medium, large and extra-large sizes. If you are unsure which size your dog should wear, here's a guideline: Toy breeds wear small, beagle-size dogs wear medium, retriever-size dogs wear large and dogs the size of Saint Bernards wear extra-large. If all else fails, hold the sweater up to your dog to check for size. 6. Select a sweater that will be easy to care for and that can get dirty. 7. Choose any color or pattern you like. Haute Dog sells sweaters that match the dog's fur. 8. Try the sweater on your dog to make sure it fits your dog comfortably and is easy to get on and off. 9. Have the dog wear the sweater anytime it goes out in cold weather. Make putting on the sweater a part of the dog's routine, like putting on the leash, so that you don't forget and that the dog will come to expect it. Consider also purchasing boots for your dog to protect the pads of its feet from cold. by: eHow Pets Editor ˇ@ |
